Lalor/Lawlor/Lawler/O’Lalor

Dedicated to the celebration of the O’Leathlobhair Clan and its heritage. Translating from Irish as “the half leper”, you find variations of the surname as Lalor/Lawlor/Lawler/O’Lalor as well as other unique spellings. The O’Leathlobhairs were a Gaelic Clan, one of the Seven Septs of Laois, whose lands surrounds the famous Rock of Dunamase. They were an important Clan within this region right until Queen Elizabeth I’s brutal plantation of Co. Laois.
Every year on a weekend in July, an annual clan gathering takes place in Co. Laois, where Lalors from all over Ireland, and from international communities, come together to honour the history of the O’Leathlobhair clan. The weekend involves a tour to locations in Co. Laois associated with the history of the name, as well as a clan gathering dinner, with storytelling, music, dancing, workshops but most importantly, the election of the Clan chieftain who will represent the O’Leathlobhairs throughout the year and will be bestowed with a ceremonial cloak and staff. All members in attendance on the night are entitled to vote in the election process and all members in attendance can submit their name for chieftain.
If you would like to become a member, you can fill in the form here and pay a fee of €10 to receive your official certificate. All payments go towards organising our annual gathering. Every donation is appreciated.
The O'Leathlobhair Clan is registered with the Clans of Ireland, Finte na hÉireann), an organisation established in 1989 to represent and coordinate the activities of Irish clans and historical families, promoting their heritage and culture.
